European Union Launches New Requirements for Testing Footwear Materials

Technical committee 216 of International Organization for Standardization (ISO/TC 216) “Footwear” developed standard ISO 16190:2021 ”Footwear — Critical substances potentially present in footwear and footwear components — Test method to quantitatively determine polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in footwear materials” at the end of 2021. The standard revised the first edition of Technical Specification ISO/TS 16190:2013 and updates such items as:

  • sample preparation procedure
  • calculation of results method

Along with technical and editorial changes, a new annex was added as well as the option to state a sum of PAH.

The standard covers hazardous materials and describes methods that help to determine the amount of PAHs that have been identified as carcinogenic in footwear and footwear components.

With this regard, the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) worked out EN ISO 16190:2021 based on ISO 16190:2021 that also became effective at the end of 2021.
