Brazil Updates Technical Requirements for Telecommunications Products Working with Narrowband IoT

On February 1st, 2019, The National Telecommunications Agency of Brazil (ANATEL), published the Act № 630 on minimum Technical Requirements for conformity assessment of Access Terminal Stations (ETA) and Act № 631 on Technical Requirements for conformity assessment of Transceivers for Radio Base Station (RB) to include the NB-IoT requirements.

The main reason for this update was the creation of technical requirements for products that work with the following technologies:

  • Category I — products that work with NB-IoT LTE Cat. M1 and NB-IoT Cat. NB1 technologies
  • Category II — products that work with NB-IoT RB power dynamic range for in-band or guard band operation

Narrowband IoT (NB-IoT) is a new Low Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN) technology specifically developed for devices that require small amounts of data over long periods and indoor coverage in Internet of Things (IoT) applications.

But it should be considered that Act № 630 for Access Terminal Stations (ETA) also sets requirements for the following technologies: LTE (3GPP), HSPA+, WCDMA/HSDPA/HSUPA, CDMA2000, GSM/GPRS/EDGE, TDMA, and CDMA.

These new acts will allow manufacturers to certify their products using this technology in Brazil.

Currently, there are no laboratories in Brazil that are capable of performing NB-IoT testing. Thus, it will be possible to provide foreign test reports that comply with the following requirements:

  • Testing was performed within the last 2 years by a laboratory accredited by ILAC
  • The test report must refer to the standards described in the ANATEL requirements
