EU Adopts New Ecodesign Regulation for External Power Supplies

The new Commission Regulation (EU) 2025/2052 on ecodesign requirements for external power supplies (EPS) was approved at the end of 2025. It will repeal Regulation (EU) 2019/1782.

The regulation doesn’t apply to:

  • Uninterruptible power supplies (UPS)
  • Separate control gears (except those in battery-operated products)
  • Separate control gears for emergency lighting luminaires
  • Separate control gears for low luminous flux light sources
  • EPS made exclusively for the use together with medical devices only
  • Docking stations for self-contained devices
  • EPS made exclusively for the use with transport facilities for persons or goods
  • Consumer products where the primary load of the converted voltage inside is not supplied to the end product

In addition to ecodesign requirements, the regulation also contains information on

  • Conformity assessment procedure
  • Verification procedure for market surveillance purposes
  • Benchmarks for the best-performing products and technologies on the market

Key Ecodesign requirements for EPS consist of the following:

  • Energy efficiency requirements
  • Power output performance requirements
  • Interoperability requirements
  • Information requirements
  • Technical documentation requirements

Please note, under the new information requirements, EPS that can be used with multiple devices or different generations of the same device must display the "Common Charger" logo as bellow:

The logo must have a minimum height of:

  • 5 mm for the nameplate
  • 7 mm for the enclosure, packaging or the instruction manual

‘XX’ indicates:

  • the maximum nameplate output power provided by a single USB Type-C or USB-PD port
  • the value of the guaranteed output power for dynamic EPS.

Manufacturers must also display the logo on their website where it can be clearly visible.

In addition, the "Common Charger" logo must be included on the label required for powered products under the Directive 2014/53/EU as well.

The regulation becomes effective from December 14, 2028

However, manufacturers of EPS can voluntarily comply with the Regulation (EU) 2025/2052 from the approval date. In this case, the product will also be considered compliant with the current Regulation (EU) 2019/1782.
