Australia Launches New Cybersecurity Requirements for Smart Devices

The Australian Government adopted Cyber Security (Security Standards for Smart Devices) Rules 2025, which were approved on March 4, 2025. The document became fully effective on March 4, 2026. It applies to so called relevant connectable products — products that can connect to the internet directly or indirectly.

The security standards cover relevant connectable products intended for personal, domestic, or household use that were manufactured on or after March 4, 2026. The following types of products are outside the scope of the Rules:

  • desktop computers or laptops
  • tablet computers
  • smartphones
  • therapeutic goods
  • road vehicles and their components

The Rules contain the following three baseline requirements that relates to cyber security and personal data protection:

  1. No universal default passwords
Passwords must be strong and unique per product or defined by the user
  2. Vulnerability reporting management
Manufacturers must maintain vulnerability reports and inform users how to report about the hardware or software security issues for the product. The information must be accessible, clear, transparent, and available free of charge
  3. Software and security updates issues
Manufacturers must give a clear indication of the minimum period during which security updates will be provided. This period can not be shortened after the product is purchased. Information about the support period must be easily accessible, clear and transparent.

Please note, that manufacturers should prepare and maintain a statement of compliance showing that the product meets the Rules. The retention period for the statement of compliance is 5 years.
