EU Commission Adopts Two Amendments to RoHS Directive
On August 8, 2019, the EU Commission adopted two Pack 14 delegated Directives amending Annex III of Directive EU 2011/65/EU on “the Restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment”.
The EU RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU (also known as RoHS 2) restricting the use of hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment. The document entered into force on July 21, 2011 and is applicable in the entire EU. Annexes III and IV to RoHS 2 include the materials and components of electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) for specific applications exempted from the substance restrictions of the Derective.
Through these two Directives the European Commission amends Annex III of RoHS 2 for use of lead and Bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP). The exemption was established for category 11 named “Other EEE not covered by any of the categories above”.
The European Commission has adopted a five-year RoHS Directive exemption for the use of :
Lead in solder of sensors, actuators, and engine control units of combustion engines for non-road mobile machinery. This is on condition they are installed in equipment used at fixed positions while in operation, that is designed for professionals, but also used by non-professionals.
Bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) in rubber components in engine systems, designed for use in equipment that is not intended solely for consumer use, subject to maximum concentration value.
The exemption expires on July 21, 2024.
The Directives will enter into force on the 20th day following its publication in the Official Journal of the European Union.
