New International Standard on Safety of A/V and IT Equipment Comes into Force

November 14, 2019

As you may know, product safety assessment for audio/video products and for information technology equipment is carried out according to two different standards: IEC 60065 and IEC 60950-1.

However, there are a lot of products that fall into the scope of both standards, therefore, IEC Technical Committee (TC 108) “Safety of electronic equipment within the field of audio/video, information technology and communication technology“  worked out IEC 62368-1 standard that covers both A/V and IT equipment.

Unfortunately, the scope of IEC 62368-1 is much different from IEC 60065 and IEC 60950-1. That makes difficult to simply merge these standards and have the manufacturer to re-evaluate their products. Due to this fact, the effective date of IEC 62368-1 has been discussed for some time by various committees around the world. Finally, it was agreed to set December 2020 as an effective date. It is supposed that IEC 60950‑1 and IEC 60065 standards will be withdrawn by this date and products covered by the scope of IEC 62368‑1 will need to comply with the requirements of the new standard.

Now manufacturers should take actions that allow compliance with the requirements of IEC 62368‑1 until December 2020.

However, not all countries around the world have yet adopted IEC 62368‑1 and it is really critical for a manufacturer who is planning to deliver the products to the different countries to certify the product according to both standards. Anyway, countries around the world adopt the requirements of IEC 62368-1 step by step.

Thus, Emirates Authority for Standardization and Metrology (ESMA) recently issued a new guideline for the regulation of audio/video and  IT/communication technology equipment. This document regulates, among other things, that starting from December 2020, all audio/video and IT/communication technology equipment must comply with the IEC 62368-1 standard and have a valid Certificate of Conformity issued under ECAS/EQM.

With this regards, it is expected that by December 2020 any Certificates of Conformity issued under the IEC 60065 and/or IEC 60950-1 standards will no longer be valid.
