Starting from January 1, 2019, products that are subject to the mandatory standards of Uganda have to be certified against requirements of the relevant national standards and must contain the UNBS Distinctive Mark (Q mark).
This mark can be affixed either on the product itself or on its packaging. The mark gives an assurance to the customer that the product conforms with the Uganda Standards and the quality of this product is approved.
By now, the Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) has issued over 3,000 standards. However, not all of them are mandatory. There are 1,300 mandatory standards that are covered by the new regulation.
If the manufacturer wants to get access to the market, he needs to test the product against relevant national standards of Uganda and pass the audit production system. Once the product is certified and receives the UMBS Quality mark, certification audit and sample testing are to be carried out by the UNBS auditors.
