ASMA Amends Telecommunication Standards in Australia

Recently, the Australian Communications and Media Authority (the ACMA) had closed consultation process on “Remaking Telco standards and changes to the labeling notice”. As a result, ASMA reissued the following standards:
 

  • Telecommunications (Mobile Equipment Air Interface) Technical Standard 2018

  • Telecommunications (Customer Equipment Safety) Technical Standard 2018

  • Telecommunications (Labelling Notice for Customer Equipment and Customer Cabling) Amendment Instrument 2018 (No. 1)

 

The following changes were made to the Telecommunications (Mobile Equipment Air Interface) Technical Standard 2018:

 

  1. adding provisions that allow transition periods in case when the referenced industry standards are amended or replaced

  2. adding Part 4 — Savings and transitional arrangements with regards to items manufactured, imported or modified before the commencement of the new ACMA technical standard

  3. excluding the requirements for GSM customer equipment (this type of equipment is no longer supplied in Australia)

  4. adopting the standard AS/CA S042.1:2018 — Requirements for connection to an air interface of a Telecommunications Network — Part 1: General

  5. adopting the standard AS/CA S042.4:2018 — Requirements for connection to an air interface of a Telecommunications Network — Part 4: IMT Customer Equipment.

The following changes were made to the Telecommunications (Customer Equipment Safety) Technical Standard 2018:

 

  1. repealing the Telecommunications Technical Standard (Information Technology Equipment — Safety, Part 1: General Requirements — AS/NZS 60950.1:2011) 2011

  2. adopting the 2018 SA standard AS/NZS 62368.1:2018 — Audio/Video and Communications technology equipment — Part 1: Safety requirements

  3. introducing a transition period ending in February 2022. Within this period the  relevant customer equipment may comply with either the 2015 AS/NZS 60950 industry standard or the 2018 AS/NZS 62368 industry standard

  4. including savings and transitional arrangements relating to items manufactured, imported or modified before the commencement of the new ACMA technical standard.
