New Energy Efficiency Requirements for Cooking Appliances in Switzerland

Adopted by the Swiss Federal Council on November 1, 2017 , this Ordinance is aimed at reducing energy consumption and increasing energy efficiency of mass-produced equipment, vehicles, and installations.

Compliance deadlines for each specific product are introduced on a phased basis. From February 1, 2019, ecodesign requirements apply to domestic electric ovens, domestic hoods, and household electrical hot plates. This also ends the transitional period for non-compliant foregoing products to be placed on the market.

The Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE) is responsible for monitoring and fining for non-compliance with established requirements.

Annex 1.6 of this Ordinance is applicable to domestic electric ovens (including incorporated in cookers). However, the following products are out of scope of this law:

  • ovens that use energy sources other than electricity

  • appliances with the “microwave heating” function

  • small ovens

  • portable ovens

  • heat storage ovens

  • ovens which are heated with steam as a primary heating function

  • covered gas burners in hobs

  • outdoor cooking appliances

  • appliances designed for the use only with 3rd family gases (propane and butane)

  • grills

From February 1, 2019, domestic electric ovens can be placed on the market if their energy efficiency index complies with the requirements of the third stage of the Annex I ch.1.1 of the Regulation (EU) № 66/2014, mentioned below:

As regards to marking requirements, with the exception of EU emblems, the energy label must comply with the Annexes I to VI of the Regulation (EU) № 65/2014.

Annex 1.7 of this Ordinance applies to domestic hoods. Domestic hoods can be placed on the market if their energy efficiency index complies with the maximum EEIhood and the minimum Fluid Dynamic Efficiency—FDEhood limits of the third stage as indicated in the table below:

As regards to marking requirements, with the exception of EU emblems, the energy label must comply with the Annexes I to VI of the Regulation (EU) № 65/2014.

The label shall be in accordance with point 2.1.3 of Annex III (Label 3) of the Regulation (EU) № 65/2014 or, where suppliers deem appropriate, with point 2.1.4 of that Annex (Label 4) of the above-mentioned Regulation.

Annex 2.5 of this Ordinance applies to domestic electrical hot plates. It doesn’t apply to hot plates that use energy sources other than electricity.

Domestic electrical hot plates can be placed on the market if their energy efficiency index complies with the maximum energy consumption limits of the third stage for electric hobs (ECelectric hob) as indicated in the table below:

The following information shall be included into the label placed on domestic electric ovens and hoods:

  • Supplier’s name or trademark

  • Supplier’s model identifier, where ‘model identifier’ means the code, usually alphanumeric, which distinguishes a specific domestic oven model from other models with the same trademark or supplier’s name

  • The energy efficiency class

  • Energy consumption and etc.
