Panama Issues Energy Efficiency Requirements for Refrigerators and Freezers
Starting from February 28, 2019, all the refrigerators and freezers imported and sold in Panama can be banned from circulation if the equipment does not comply with new requirements.
On 20 February 2018, the Panamanian Ministry of Commerce and Industry adopted Resolution № 31 which approves the Technical Regulation DGNTI-COPANIT 105:2017 on Energy Efficiency and Labelling of Refrigerators and Freezers.
It applies to domestic refrigerators, freezer refrigerators up to 1104 dm3 (39ft3) and domestic freezers up to 850 dm3 (30ft3) operated by hermetic motor compressors. It also applies to refrigerators and freezers within the scope of the Technical Standard DGNTI-COPANIT 511:2017.
Commercial vertical or horizontal freezers are excluded from this Regulation.
According to the Regulation, the importers, manufacturers or sellers must meet two requirements:
1. This Regulation requires compliance with the minimum Energy Efficiency Indexes contained in the above-mentioned Technical Standard. They also must have a certificate of conformity, which can be issued by the General Directorate of Standards and Industrial Technology (DGNTI) or any certification body accredited with the National Accreditation Council (CNA).
2. The Regulation also establishes the minimum energy efficiency levels for domestic refrigerators and freezers together with the labeling requirements.
The energy efficiency label must be located outside the door of the product and must be clearly visible. The label must indicate the equipment consumption, have information about product type, brand, model, cooling capacity, power, and savings.
Note that from August 28, 2019, products that do not comply with foregoing requirements will be prohibited from selling to end-users in Panama.
