3G Termination in Taiwan

January 3, 2019

According to the Telecommunications Act and Regulations for Administration of the Third Generation Mobile Communications Business (3G) issued by the The National Communications Commission of Taiwan (NCC), operators, who want to use radio frequency spectrum in Taiwan have to apply for the concession license. This license is issued for the specific period of time. In terms of 3G license, the expiration date is December 31, 2018.

It means that from January 2019, 3G service will be replaced by 4G service. The use of 3G will be forbidden. However, 3G operators who got a 4G concession license may use their licensing spectrum and provide WCDMA service when 3G service is expired.

The termination of 3G service is contingent on management efficiency of the radio frequency spectrum.

Those who subscribe to 3G service have to renew their contracts with operators and switch to 4G.
