Happy World Standards Day

October 12, 2018

A standard (French: norme, German: norm) is a technical document designed to be used as a rule, guideline or definition. It is a consensus-built, repeatable way of doing something (CEN).

World Standards Day is celebrated on October 14th. Its aim is to show the importance of Standards for the world economy.

This year's motto of the Day is “International standards and The Fourth Industrial Revolution”.

Standards were crucial during the first industrial revolution. In the fourth industrial revolution, they are playing the same role. The fourth industrial revolution is characterized by a fusion of technologies that are blurring the lines between the physical, digital, and biological spheres collectively referred to as cyber-physical systems.

Standards foster the faster transition to the new era. Innovators worldwide rely on International Standards set by IEC, ISO, and ITU. The Fourth Industrial Revolution enables new technologies and trends such as robotics, artificial intelligence, nanotechnology, quantum computing, biotechnology, the Internet of Things, the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), fifth-generation wireless technologies (5G), additive manufacturing/3D printing, and fully autonomous vehicles.

The Revolution has already begun and will change the way we make goods from our personal to professional use. Standards are a powerful tool to ensure safety and minimize the risk of new developments.

We are all one big family making the common future better, more technological and safer together!
