Official Mexican Standard NOM-028-ENER-2017 has established minimum efficiency limits for general purpose lamps intended for the lighting of residential, commercial, service, and industrial sectors and public lighting, as well as their testing methods.
This standard applies to incandescent lamps, incandescent halogen lamps, linear fluorescent light lamps, high-intensity discharge lamps, and mixed light lamps that are imported, manufactured or sold within the national territory.
The standard does not apply to products covered by other Official Mexican Standards on energy efficiency or to the following types of lamp:
Black light, insect light traps, and infrared lamps; lamps used by vehicles, signaling lamps, lamps used in mining and plant growth, aquarium, shatterproof, and traffic signal lamps; lamps with an integrated reflector; lamps for entertainment purposes; photo-projection lamps; lamps used for medical and therapeutic purposes.
Incandescent lamps with a power rating < 40W, used in home appliances such as ovens, microwaves, refrigerators, fans, extractor hoods, sewing machines, and dryers.
Incandescent and incandescent halogen lamps with nominal voltage < 32 volts;
Left‑hand thread, triple power, and colored lamps.
Decorative incandescent lamps with a power rating < 40W, with any form of a bulb and any type of a base.
Linear fluorescent lamps of < 50 cm in length, with a color rendering index of 90 or above, and a color temperature > 7,000K, designed to operate at low temperatures; ultraviolet and other special applications.
Compact fluorescent lamps without an integrated ballast; circular fluorescent lamps.
Low‑pressure sodium-vapor lamps; LED and magnetic induction lamps.
Double-ended metal-halide lamps, with a protected discharge tube or with a reflector.
Ceramic discharge metal-halide lamps with power < 20 W, with a protected discharge tube or with a reflector.
High-pressure sodium-vapor lamps with power < 50 W, with a reflector or a color rendering index < 60.
The standard NOM-028-ENER-2017 will come into force on May 08, 2018.
