South Korea Updates Regulations on Certification of Automobiles

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport of South Korea revised regulations concerning the certification and investigation of automobiles and automobile parts. The Ministry published Notification No. 2025-211 on April 25, 2025.

The purpose of the document is to determine the details necessary for self-certification, certification of replacement parts, correction of manufacturing defects, and performance testing of automobiles and auto parts.

In accordance with this notification, it is necessary now to include information about the manufacturer, type, and main raw materials of drive storage battery cells in the automobile specification table. Additionally, the new requirements have been included regarding the standard date for production, assembly, or import of automobiles, etc.

The standard dates for applying the automobile safety standards for self-certified motor vehicles (including two-wheeled vehicles):

  1. Domestically manufactured and assembled vehicles that are self-certified without undergoing technical review and safety inspection
    - The date of manufacture on the vehicle manufacturing certificate
  2. Imported automobiles that are self-certified without undergoing technical review and safety inspection
    - The date of receipt of the import declaration certificate
  3. Manufactured or imported automobiles that undergo technical review and safety inspection and self-certified
    - The date of application for the safety inspection.

Please note, the Ministry will review the validity of the notification every three years starting from July 1, 2025 (to be completed by June 30 of every third year) and take measures to improve it.
