South Korea Allocates 6 GHz Band for Unlicensed Use

South Korea became the second country that has made a 6GHz band available for unlicensed use. Thus, the Ministry of Science and ICT of South Korea approved 1.2GHz of spectrum in the 6GHz band (5,925 MHz to 7,125 MHz) for unlicensed use on October 15, 2020.

It was decided to allow free access to indoor use for the devices operating in the 5.925-7.125 GHz band with a maximum EIRP of 25mW. This spectrum will also be available for device-to-device connections for both indoor and outdoor use.

First of all, this step allows South Korea to speed up the Wi-Fi service operation significantly and to improve the quality of connection in such places as schools, cafes, and public transport zones.

The Ministry of Science and ICT is also planning to extend free public Wi-Fi service to 41,000 additional locations throughout the country by 2022.
