Italy Establishes New Legislation on Leather Materials

The Council of Ministers of Italy approved a Decree No 68 on definitions related to leather materials and labelling requirements. The decision on using new terminologies and labels with regards to leather products was made to harmonize the Italian legislation with the EU law provisions.

The following definitions were reviewed:

  • Leather (cuoio, pelle)
  • Bonded leather (rigenerato di fibre di cuoio)
  • Full grain leather (cuoio pieno fiore)
  • Coated leather (cuoio rivestito, pelle rivestita)
  • Fur (pelliccia)

Please note that a manufacturer or importer is responsible for labeling the material in the right way. The labels must be durable, easily legible, visible, and accessible. However, it is possible not to mark the material when the materials and products manufactured with them are placed on the market to be processed by economic operators in the supply chain. In this case, the information on the material should be indicted in the accompanying commercial document.

The decree becomes effective from October 24, 2020. It revokes the previous Decree No. 1112 of 16 December 1966.

However, the products that have been put on the market before the validity date of the new Decree can be sold with the old labels. For these goods, the provisions of the new Decree will become mandatory after October 23, 2022.
