European Union Takes Steps on Post‑consumer Textile Waste

The European Recycling Industries’ Confederation (EuRIC) issued a guide “EuRIC Textiles Handling & Sorting Specifications for re-use and recycling of used textiles”. The document is developed as a support mechanism in the implementation of the EU’s Circular Economy Package that is focused on the separate textile waste collection from 2025. The guide is designed for textile producers, importers, retailers, and organizations involved in the sorting and recycling of collected post-consumer textile waste, etc.

It is aimed at helping interested parties to collect and sort the items for either re-use or recycling.

The guidance contains recommendations that give an insight into the identification and quick removal of the impurities that can degrade the quality of textile. It also describes how to collect, sort, and store textile waste. These requirements are aligned with the EU’s Waste Framework Directive (WFD). Requirements to separate collection of textiles should become effective from January 1, 2025 and will be related not only to the product manufactured in the EU but also for those produced outside the EU.

According to the statistics, textile consumption is assumed to be the fourth-highest pressure category in the EU regarding the use of primary raw materials and water and fifth for greenhouse gases. That is why the decision was taken to extend the manufacturer's responsibility by adding responsibility for component materials throughout a products’ lifecycle, including the textile industry as well.
