European Union Issues New Version of Toy Standard

In the EU, a new version of the standard on Flammability of Toys has been issued. The EN 71-2:2020 standard was published by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) in December 2020 but there is a grace period up to June 30, 2021. All members of the CEN should harmonize this version of standard  by that time. Prior to that, the previous version EN 71-2:2011+A1:2014 can be applied within conformity assessment procedure.

This European Standard includes general requirements referring to all toys and requirements concerning flammability of certain toys when they are subjected to a small source of ignition.

The key changes relate to disguise costumes requirements. The reason for such changes lies in one accident that happened during Halloween with the Disguise dress.

Thus, in the standard new definition of disguise costumes has appeared. Also the new version contains requirements for toy disguise costumes that contain loose stuffing and recommendations on the reduction of the rate of spread of flames as well as test methods that require to test the toy disguise costumes before and after washing. Apart from that, the sample preparation method was specified and now it allows testing of smaller and narrower pieces.
